For the September Play Inspiration,
I've made a Simple Mixed Media Canvas- "Be Brave"
I was inspired by the theme, "Oh Blessed Mistake" and the gorgeous moodboard colors.
Making mistakes is a part of the learning process and sometimes, those same mistakes can lead to wonderful new discoveries & good surprises. For me, one of the favourite things about mixed media work is that it is a very forgiving form of artwork. When we make mistakes which we want to cover up, there is gesso and embellishments to do the job. And sometimes, we keep the mistakes in our work because they lend it more character and meaning especially in art journalling where the aim is self expression more than perfection :) I find that when I feel I have made a disaster, keeping the piece away for a few days and coming back to it after some time, often helps me to rectify it as I see it in a new light. Another helpful tip is to change the scale of things, I find that if it looks like a disaster on a 5 by 7 inch piece, if I cut it up into smaller pieces and use it to make mini art or increase the scale, to use parts of it in a bigger piece like a 12 by 12 layout, it suddenly, changes the look & the mistake, no more remains a mistake. So my message here is to not be so tough on yourself or expect perfection, sometimes the mistakes we make are our inner arty soul trying to express something we didn't even know in our conscious minds!
Here are some photographs of the Canvas:
Synopsis of the Process:
This canvas was a lot of fun to make as I used up some Impasto Texture Paste that had become clumpy since I hadn't used it for a while. So, I added that to the canvas and created a lot of texture with it using a palette knife. Then using some heavy body gel, I adhered on bits and bobs from around the house, keys, locks, nails, screws, old beads, coffee beans, threads etc Once I was happy with the composition, I applied heavy white gesso to everything & added color using various alcohol inks and Lindy's sprays. Then, I did random stamping with archival ink around the canvas. To create highlights, I did the dry brushing technique with white gesso and some opal magic wax. And in the end, adhered the sentiment using a Tim Holtz quote chip & darkened the edges of the canvas with distress ink.
Look forward to seeing your beautiful work xoxo
